They said it was “Too hard.” She proved them wrong.
MADISON, Wis. (February 6, 2025) -- What happens when a determined entrepreneur takes on a neglected, timeworn house that belonged to her Great Uncle and transforms it into something special? Home Again – A Restoration Story answers the question, "Can you go home again?" It's a captivating blend of storytelling, photography, and history that chronicles the revival of a home and the author's dance with the past, present, and future.
"This book is for anyone who has ever been told something was too hard," explained Gallagher. "Several people questioned why I would want to buy this old, run-down house with 60 amp service and almost no improvements since 1980. Several contractors and reasonable, rational friends looked at the project and said it would take a lot to turn this around. But I've been managing projects, clients, and people for decades. I thought, 'How hard could it be?' I counted the costs and moved forward. It wasn't long before I realized there were many people interested in taking on a project like this or simply people longing for the comforts of years gone by and that the story resonated. I began documenting the restoration daily and photographing the projects as they happened."
Home Again reads like a journal, blending short stories with vivid photographs of the restoration process. Gallagher invites readers to experience every step of the transformation—from working with contractors to uncovering hidden gems in the house—and to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the rural area that surrounds it. One early reader shared, “I found myself rooting for Laura and her team of contractors every step of the way!”
Perfect for those who dream of restoring old houses or those nostalgic for the simpler days of yesteryear, Home Again – A Restoration Story is a rich source of inspiration. It’s a beautiful reminder that home is not just where you live, but where you reconnect—with the past, with others, and with yourself.
Set in Apple River, a village tucked away in Jo Daviess County on Stagecoach Trail, Home Again is more than just a tale of house restoration; it’s a tribute to the power of community, craftsmanship, and the spirit of resilience. Gallagher's story also touches on the magic of uncovering forgotten treasures during the renovation—each item with a unique history, adding depth and meaning to her journey.
“The investment wasn’t just in the restoration of the house,” says Gallagher. “It was an investment in a community, in creating a place where life happens at a slower, more meaningful pace. I want others to consider embracing the opportunities in small towns like Apple River.”
The cover design was a work commissioned by Gallagher for the book cover. Jay Handy is a master printmaker. Jay’s work delicately layers memories and emotions, evoking a sense of nostalgia and wonder. His thoughtful approach to detail and texture made him the perfect choice to create the beautiful cover of Home Again – A Restoration Story.
The interior was thoughtfully designed by graphic artist Hallie Heuser, with illustrations by Dylan Rogers of The Creative Company. Editing was provided by Tristan Geisking and Ben Sefarbi, also of The Creative Company. The website was also developed at the firm by Craig Hadley. Home Again – A Restoration Story is the debut publication of Mathetria Press, LLC, Laura Gallagher's publishing company.
